When we gathered at Danske Bank last week for our final Member Meeting of 2025, we had timely, forward-looking conversations on Digital Assets—shaped by the insights on stage and continued in the informal chats throughout the two days.
Here are a few reflections we came home with:
Regulation as the main market driver:
💡 Regulation is setting direction, not just rules. US regulation shapes global momentum and market structure, with ripple effects into Europe and beyond.
💡 Europe’s approach is enabling “trusted scale.” MiCA and EU Digital Euro work create a clearer runway for institutional and retail adoption.
💡 The policy debate has matured. For CBDC/Digital Euro, the question is now how and when, with concrete legislative/design choices forming.
💡Euro-denominated public and private digital money is a sovereignty/geopolitics play, not just a payments efficiency story.
Trust is the real scaling layer:
💡 “Tokenisation of trust”. Winning models embed safeguards, governance, and clear accountability.
💡Banks’ core advantage is credibility; their role in compliance, identity, consumer protection, and resilience is even more valuable on-chain.
💡Adoption hurdles remain trust-shaped. UX, security, and perceived safety matter as much as technical capability.
Convergence toward on-chain, real-time settlement:
💡 You don’t get full efficiency without on-chain cash. Tokenised assets deliver real gains only when cash/settlement money also lives and moves on-chain.
💡Programmability changes what settlement is. Conditional payments, automated controls, and 24/7 operations become native features, not bolt-ons.
Stablecoins vs. tokenised deposits = “multi-token future”:
💡Both models are likely to co-exist. The debate is shifting from “winner takes all” to where each fits best.
💡Customer use cases pull them mainstream: payments, treasury, cross-border liquidity, and platform settlement are near-term magnets.
💡Interoperability is the big open problem. The future depends on how easily tokens move across banks, chains, and payment environments.
Collaboration as the new operating model:
💡 Bank-to-bank collaboration is deepening. A paradigm shift toward shared rails, shared standards, and joint stablecoin approaches.
💡 Partnerships outside traditional ecosystems are required. Banks need regulated digital-asset specialists for secure infrastructure & automation.
From pilots to customer value:
💡The industry is past experimentation mode. Focus is now on regulated services that feel like normal banking products.
💡Customer segment reassessment is urgent. New tech maturity means new use cases — banks need to revisit who benefits first and why.
💡Infrastructure is ready-ish; productization is the work. Turning custody/settlement/compliance into usable, everyday experiences is the next competitive frontier.
